The phonetics and phonology of vowel length variation in Korean reduplicated ideophones

چکیده
Kim, Hyung-Soo. 2008. The phonetics and phonology of vowel length variation in Korean reduplicated ideophones. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 14.2. 39-60. Reduplicated ideophones in Korean present interesting problems in phonetics and phonology of vowel length variation. The vowel in the first syllable is short in the partially reduplicated type, e.g. sa ̆lɨlɨ ‘gently’, but long in the fully reduplicated type, e.g. sa ̄lsal. The long vowel in the corresponding ideophone of the latter type, on the other hand, often appears as short after laryngealized obstruents, e.g. s’a ̆ls’al. In this paper three attempts are made to explain this length variation. The first of these is phonetically based, on the hypothesis that laryngeal onsets influence the duration of the following vowel, while the remaining analyses are based on two independent phonological theories, one making use of the feature [long] for tense and aspirated consonants and the Obligatory Contour Principle and the other the concepts of strength fluxion and the Inertial Development Principle. Although some questions are left for future studies, analyzing this and related problems illuminates many of the skills required of a typical phonetic/phonological analysis: sorting out the data and interpreting its relevance, establishing viable hypotheses using one’s phonetic and phonological knowledge, and integrating them for a plausible explanation. Vowel Harmony in Korean and Morpheme Correspondence1
The two most controversial aspects of vowel harmony in Korean ideophones are its morphologically restricted nature and the harmonic feature governing these alternations. Not only is the harmony pattern restricted to the ideophone class2, but also the value of the harmonic feature determines the meaning of the ideophone itself. While alternations from one feature to another involve relative lowe...
متن کاملPhonetics versus phonology: English word final /s/ in Korean loanword phonology
In this paper we consider various perspectives on loanword phonology by examining the borrowing into Korean of English words having a word-final /s/. These have been borrowed into Korean with a tense [ ] followed by an epenthetic vowel, as illustrated by the borrowing of English bus as [ 3 ]. The realization of English word-final /s/ as [ ] is apparently unexpected given that English [s] and Ko...
متن کاملSpanish complex onsets and the phonetics–phonology interface*
This study analyzes cross-dialectal phonetic variation in Spanish complex onsets in light of recent work on the phonetics–phonology interface. Two basic patterns of obstruent-rhotic cluster realization, vowel intrusion and coarticulation-induced rhotic assibilation, receive a phonetically-motivated explanation in terms of the temporal coordination of consonantal gestures, within the framework o...

This paper reanalyzes the so-called emphatic suffixation in Korean, with a focus on the base and suffixal forms used in previous analyses. Jun (1994) analyzes these cases under his rule of Metrical Weight Consiste...
متن کاملPhonetics and Phonology in Russian Unstressed Vowel Reduction: A Study in Hyperarticulation
Unstressed vowel reduction figures centrally in recent literature on the phonetics-phonology interface, in part owing to the possibility of a causal relationship between a phonetic process, duration-dependent undershoot, and the phonological neutralizations observed in systems of unstressed vocalism. Of particular interest in this light has been Russian, traditionally described as exhibiting tw...
